Claim: Under a historical Miskito Kingdom that existed for roughly 250 years under British protection, Britain and Nicaragua concluded the 1860 Treaty of Managua, transferring Nicaraguan suzerainty over the wider Caribbean coast while preserving a more limited Mosquito Reserve; an 1881 adjudication affirmed Miskito self-government within that reserve, but in 1894 the territory was formally incorporated into the Republic of Nicaragua.
