What happened
Manipur was incorporated into India in October 1949 following the Manipur Merger Agreement of 21 September 1949; some Manipuri nationalist organisations have characterized this merger as illegal, a characterization not independently adjudicated here.[1]

Claim: Manipur, a princely state that had signed an Instrument of Accession in 1947, was incorporated into India in October 1949 as a centrally administered Chief Commissioner's Province following the Manipur Merger Agreement, signed 21 September 1949; this change of administrative status generated resentment that grew after neighbouring Nagaland achieved full statehood in 1962. Some Manipuri nationalist organisations, including the UNLF, have characterized the merger as illegal and unconstitutional, a characterization not independently adjudicated here.
