Lega Nord founded, 1991
A merger of six northern Italian regionalist parties formed Lega Nord, which later became the principal Padanian nationalist vehicle before shifting to federalism and Italian nationalism.
What happened
Lega Nord was founded as a political party on 8 January 1991, following an alliance formed on 4 December 1989 merging six regional parties: Liga Veneta, Lega Lombarda, Piedmont Autonomists, Ligurian Union, the Emilian-Romagna League and the Tuscan Alliance.[1] Umberto Bossi was its founder and long-time federal secretary.[2]
