The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI) was founded by Qazi Muhammad in Mahabad in 1945, initially as a pan-Kurdish party with members from both Iraq and Iran; Mahabad became, for most of 1946, the capital of the de facto Kurdish Republic of Mahabad.[1]

Claim: The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI) was founded by Qazi Muhammad in Mahabad in 1945, initially as a pan-Kurdish party with members from both Iraq and Iran; Mahabad became, for most of 1946, the capital of the de facto Kurdish Republic of Mahabad. After Qazi Muhammad's execution in March 1947, the party was repressed and operated largely underground for the following decades; after a Kurdish rebellion was crushed in 1966-1967, the party was reorganized following the 1973 election of Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou as Secretary-General.
