Assassination of U Bee Htu Re and the 1948 Karenni uprising

The killing of a Karenni leader opposed to incorporation into Burma triggered a decades-spanning armed uprising.

What happened

In August 1948, Karenni leader U Bee Htu Re was assassinated for opposing incorporation of the Karenni States into the Union of Burma, precipitating an armed uprising.[1]

    Claim: The 1947 Constitution of the Union of Burma amalgamated the historically separate Karenni States into a single constituent state, with a constitutional provision allowing for possible secession after ten years; in August 1948, Karenni leader U Bee Htu Re was assassinated by central government-aligned militia for opposing this incorporation, an event that precipitated an armed uprising against the central government that has continued in various forms to the present. In 1952, the former Shan state of Mong Pai was added to the territory, which was renamed Kayah State.
