Karelia sovereignty declaration, 1990
Karelia became the first Soviet autonomous republic to declare sovereignty, later renamed the Republic of Karelia.
What happened
On 9 August 1990, the Karelian ASSR declared state sovereignty and was renamed the Karelian Soviet Socialist Republic; it was the first Soviet autonomous republic to declare sovereignty.[1] On 13 November 1991, it was renamed the Republic of Karelia, the name it retains as a federal subject of Russia.[2]
In December 1991, Finland formally renounced any territorial claim to Karelia.[3]
