The Constitution of the Irish Free State came into legal effect on 6 December 1922, one year after the Treaty was signed, establishing the Irish Free State as a self-governing dominion.
What happened
The Constitution of the Irish Free State, ratified by Dáil Éireann sitting as a constituent assembly on 25 October 1922 and approved at Westminster on 5 December 1922, came into legal effect on 6 December 1922, amid the ongoing civil war.[1] According to RTÉ's Century Ireland project, the constitution declared that "all powers of government and all authority legislative, executive and judicial, in Ireland are derived from the people of Ireland," while remaining constrained by the dominion status set out in the Treaty.[1]
