Creation of the Republic of Ingushetia, 1992
Russia formally created the Ingush Republic, separating it from Chechnya but excluding the disputed Prigorodny District, setting the stage for armed conflict weeks later.
What happened
On 4 June 1992, Russia passed the law "On the Creation of the Ingush Republic in the Russian Federation," formally separating Ingushetia from the Checheno-Ingush ASSR; the border with Chechnya was provisionally set to the pre-1934 boundary, but the law did not include the Prigorodny District, which the Ingush claimed, within the new republic.[1]
