1991 Ingush referendum
Ingush voters overwhelmingly approved separation from Checheno-Ingushetia and the creation of an Ingush republic that would remain within Russia.
What happened
On 30 November 1991, Ingush voters were asked in a referendum whether they favored establishing an Ingush Republic within the Russian Federation, with the return of the disputed Prigorodny District and a capital in Vladikavkaz; on a turnout of 73.48% (96,873 of 131,834 registered voters), 94.31% (89,661 votes) voted in favour and 5.69% (5,406 votes) against.[1]
