Independence of India, 1947
The Indian Independence Act, 1947, enacted by the UK Parliament, established India and Pakistan as two independent dominions with effect from 15 August 1947.
What happened
The Indian Independence Act, 1947 received Royal Assent from the UK Parliament on 18 July 1947. Section 1(1) provided: "As from the fifteenth day of August, nineteen hundred and forty-seven, two independent Dominions shall be set up in India, to be known respectively as India and Pakistan."[1] The Act designated 15 August 1947 as "the appointed day" on which the new dominions came into being.[1]
