Amid the outbreak of Tajikistan's civil war, Gorno-Badakhshan's local government declared independence, a claim it relinquished the following year.
What happened
Fighting in the Tajikistani Civil War broke out on 5 May 1992; amid this fighting, the local government in Gorno-Badakhshan declared independence from Tajikistan, and many politically active Pamiris joined the La'al-e Badakhshan movement, which demanded regional autonomy and democratic rule. Following a 1993 ceasefire, Gorno-Badakhshan relinquished its independence claim, though fighting resumed.[1]
