Frisian National Party (FNP) founded, 1961

A regionalist party advocating federalism and language protection for Friesland was founded, becoming the movement's leading electoral vehicle.

What happened

The Frisian National Party (Fryske Nasjonale Partij, FNP) was founded on 16 December 1961 by Pyt Kramer and Folkert Binnema, advocating a federal political system with greater regional authority for Friesland, protection of the Frisian language, conservation of the Frisian landscape, and Frisian control over its natural gas reserves.[1][2] At the 2023 Dutch provincial election it won 4 of 43 seats on the Provincial Council of Friesland, with around 8% of the vote.[3]
