French National Assembly vote on Corsican autonomy statute, 2026

The National Assembly approved a constitutional reform granting Corsica an autonomy statute involving the transfer of legislative powers.

What happened

Following President Macron's September 2023 deadline for talks and a March 2024 agreement on wording between the French Government and Corsican elected officials, approved by the Corsican Assembly, the French National Assembly voted 300 to 202 on 23 June 2026 to approve a constitutional reform granting Corsica an autonomy statute involving the transfer of legislative powers to the island.[1][2][3] This was the first such measure for a metropolitan French territory, and only the second attempt to amend the Fifth Republic's Constitution during Macron's presidency, after the 2024 constitutional right to abortion.[3]

Passage through the Senate, whose right-wing majority is critical of expanding Corsican autonomy, was expected to be considerably harder, with examination anticipated in autumn 2026 and the outcome uncertain.[4]
