Claim: The Freedom Front (later renamed Freedom Front Plus) was founded in March 1994 by General Constand Viljoen as a breakaway from the AVF, which had opposed participation in South Africa's 1994 democratic elections; Viljoen registered the party to contest the election after South African negotiators, facilitated in part by Thabo Mbeki, agreed to include self-determination as an additional constitutional principle in the 1993 interim Constitution, with the final constitution likewise reflecting the possibility of self-determination for cultural communities.
