Admission of Estonia to the United Nations, 1991
The Security Council recommended Estonia's admission to the United Nations on 12 September 1991, and the General Assembly admitted it on 17 September 1991.
What happened
The Security Council, having examined the application of the Republic of Estonia, recommended without a vote at its 3007th meeting on 12 September 1991 that the General Assembly admit Estonia to UN membership, alongside identical recommendations for Latvia and Lithuania.[1] The President of the Security Council remarked that "the independence of the Republic of Estonia, the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Lithuania was regained peacefully, by means of dialogue, with the consent of the parties concerned, and in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the three peoples."[1] The General Assembly admitted Estonia to UN membership at its 1st plenary meeting on 17 September 1991.[2]
