Admission of Eritrea to the United Nations, 1993
Following the Security Council's recommendation, the General Assembly admitted Eritrea as the 182nd member of the United Nations.
What happened
The Security Council, having examined Eritrea's application for UN membership, recommended on 26 May 1993 that the General Assembly admit Eritrea.[1] The General Assembly did so at its 104th plenary meeting on 28 May 1993, and the Eritrean flag was raised at UN headquarters for the first time that day.[2] Ethiopia was among the first states to recognise Eritrea's independence.[3]
