President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed signed a joint declaration in Asmara formally ending the state of war and restoring diplomatic and transport ties.
What happened
On 9 July 2018 in Asmara, President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia signed a Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship declaring that "the state of war between Ethiopia and Eritrea has come to an end" and that transport, trade, communications and diplomatic ties would resume.[1] The declaration stated that "the decision on the boundary between the two countries will be implemented," referring to the 2002 Boundary Commission ruling.[1]
