Annexation of the Emirate of Muhammara, 1924-1925
Iranian central government forces subjugated the autonomous Emirate of Muhammara, ending over a century of local Arab self-government in what is now Khuzestan province.
What happened
The Emirate of Muhammara (also called Arabistan), an autonomous entity within Qajar Iran since 1812, was subjugated by Iranian central government forces under Reza Shah between November 1924 and January 1925 and formally disestablished in 1925; its ruler, Sheikh Khaz'al, was removed from power, and the territory was fully absorbed into Iran's Khuzestan province by 1936.[1]
