What happened
On 1-2 November 1991, following his election as president, Dzhokhar Dudayev issued a unilateral declaration of Chechen independence, establishing the unrecognized Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which controlled most of the former Checheno-Ingush ASSR's Chechen-populated territory from 1991 to 2000.[1]
