What happened

On 25 February 2025, Senegal and the MFDC signed a peace agreement in Bissau, mediated by Guinea-Bissau, concluding formal negotiations on the conflict.[1]

    Claim: On 25 February 2025, following three days of negotiations in Bissau mediated by Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the Senegalese government, represented by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, and the MFDC signed a peace agreement concluding formal negotiations on the more than four-decade conflict; the agreement followed a 2023 disarmament in which approximately 250 MFDC fighters surrendered their weapons, and was described as aimed at bringing stability and economic recovery to Senegal's southern Casamance region.
