Claim: The Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), representing a region predominantly inhabited by the Jola people, agitated for regional autonomy from 1947 but did not pursue violent secession until 1982; on 26 December 1982, the modern MFDC organised its first pro-independence demonstration in Ziguinchor, replacing Senegalese flags with white flags symbolising independence, after which the arrest of its leaders triggered an escalating cycle of resistance and government crackdowns.
