What happened
On 1 August 1975, FLEC proclaimed Cabinda's independence; MPLA and Cuban-backed forces subsequently invaded and reincorporated the territory.[1]

Claim: On 1 August 1975, FLEC proclaimed the independence of the Republic of Cabinda under provisional president Luiz Ranque; forces of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), supported by Cuba, together with government forces, subsequently invaded and reincorporated Cabinda, and a low-intensity guerrilla war continued through the 1970s and 1980s amid heavy government suppression, given Cabinda's importance as an oil-producing territory.
