Buryatia adopted its own constitution and established a presidency within the framework of the new Russian Federation.
What happened
As a sovereign republic within the Russian Federation, Buryatia adopted its own Constitution in 1994, along with its own legislative and executive bodies; the Constitution establishing the presidency took effect on 1 July 1994, when Leonid Potapov took office as the republic's first President.[1] Under the 1993 Constitution of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Buryatia had already become one of 89 equal federal subjects of the new Russian Federation.[2]
