Bodo Peace Accord, 2020
A comprehensive tripartite accord with all major NDFB factions expanded Bodo self-government and was characterized by the Assam government as ending the separate-statehood demand.
What happened
On 27 January 2020, a tripartite Memorandum of Settlement was signed in New Delhi by the Indian and Assam governments, all four factions of the NDFB, ABSU, and the United Bodo People's Organization; the accord renamed the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts as the Bodoland Territorial Region, expanded the territorial council's legislative seats from 40 to 60, provided for around 1,550 NDFB militants to surrender their arms, and included an economic development package of approximately 15 billion rupees over three years.[1]
Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the accord ended the demand for a separate Bodoland state and characterized the preceding decades of conflict as having claimed over 4,000 lives.[2]
