What happened
On 30 May 1967, Lieutenant Colonel Ojukwu declared Nigeria's Eastern Region's secession as the Republic of Biafra.[1]

Claim: Following a January 1966 military coup and subsequent political crisis, Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka "Emeka" Odumegwu Ojukwu declared the secession of Nigeria's former Eastern Region, populated principally by the Igbo people, as the Republic of Biafra on 30 May 1967.
