A party advocating Bavarian autonomy or independence was founded after the Second World War, briefly becoming a major electoral force.

What happened

The Bavaria Party (Bayernpartei) was founded on 28 October 1946, advocating greater Bavarian autonomy or independence from Germany, while envisaging potential continued membership of the European Union.[1] It achieved its strongest results in the early post-war period: 20.9% of the Bavarian vote at the 1949 West German federal election, and 17.9% (39 seats) at the 1950 Bavarian state election.[2]

From 1954 to 1957, the party took part in a coalition government of the Bavarian state parliament with the Social Democratic Party and the Free Democratic Party, which temporarily removed the Christian Social Union from power.[3] Its electoral share fell sharply in subsequent decades: at the 2023 Bavarian state election it won 0.9% of the vote and no seats.[4]
