What happened
Following a rebellion beginning 17 January 2012, the MNLA declared Azawad's independence on 6 April 2012 in Gao.[1]

Claim: The National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), formed in October 2011 by former Tuareg exiles returning from Libya, led a rebellion beginning 17 January 2012 with an attack on a Malian military garrison at Ménaka; on 6 April 2012, MNLA Secretary-General Bilal ag Acherif signed a unilateral declaration of Azawad's independence from Mali in Gao.
