Claim: The Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (ARDUF, also known as "Uguugumo," meaning "Revolution") was established in March 1993 through the merger of three earlier Afar organisations; by 1998, ARDUF stated its objective as uniting Afar people under an autonomous region of Ethiopia that would also incorporate Afar-populated territories currently in Eritrea and Djibouti, rather than seeking full independence for a separate Afar state, while explicitly declining to recognize Eritrea's sovereignty on the grounds that doing so would be contrary to Afar unity.
