Founding of the Afar Liberation Front, 1975
The ALF formed to lead Ethiopia-based Afar resistance against the Derg regime, one of several state-specific Afar organisations.
What happened
Following a 1974 Berlin meeting establishing separate state-based Afar organisations, the ALF was founded in 1975 by Sultan Ali Mirah Hanfary to lead resistance against Ethiopia's Derg regime.[1]

Claim: Following a joint Afar organisational meeting in Berlin in 1974, Afar political organisers formed separate national movements along state lines — representing Afars in Ethiopia and in Djibouti respectively — a deliberate strategic choice, since a unified pan-Afar nationalist movement seeking independence across Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti was assessed as likely to face violent opposition from every state in the Horn of Africa region. The Afar Liberation Front (ALF), representing Ethiopia-based Afars, was founded in 1975 by Sultan Ali Mirah Hanfary and led Afar resistance against Ethiopia's Derg military regime.
