What happened

In an unofficial plebiscite organised locally in June 1919, 9,735 votes (95.48%) favoured union with Sweden against 461 (4.52%) opposed. The vote was not conducted or recognised by the Finnish state and had no legal effect, but it demonstrated strong local sentiment and became a central fact cited in the subsequent dispute between Sweden and Finland.[1]
